Move & explore
The Old Silk Route circuit follows the historic trade road out toward the Chinese border, taking in Tsomgo Lake, Baba Mandir and the famous 32 hairpin bends above Zuluk, with a night at a basic village homestay in Nathang Valley. A full day of Gangtok monastery sightseeing rounds the trip out. It's a shorter driving circuit than the North Sikkim route but covers a denser spread of viewpoints and history in the same five days.
Places on the way: Teesta River viewpoints, Rangpo checkpoint. The SUV picks you up at NJP or Bagdogra for the drive up, following the Teesta River with a few photo halts along the way. At Rangpo you enter Sikkim and complete ID verification at the checkpoint. You reach Gangtok by evening, free to explore MG Marg before turning in.
Places to Visit: Tsomgo (Changu) Lake, Baba Mandir, Kupup/Elephant Lake, Tukla Valley. From Gangtok the road climbs toward Tsomgo Lake, where — weather permitting — you can take a yak ride along the shore or simply walk beside the water. A short distance on is Baba Mandir, an army-maintained shrine where photography isn't allowed inside. The drive continues past Kupup, also known as Elephant Lake (Bitan Cho), and through Tukla Valley, site of an old Anglo-Tibetan skirmish from the early 1900s. By late afternoon you reach Nathang Valley at around 13,500 feet — the homestays here are simple, with heated rooms and bucket hot water, and nights drop to 2–5°C even in October.
Places to Visit: Lungthung viewpoint, Thambi View Point, Zuluk village, Padamchen, Rongli. Wake early for sunrise over Nathang's snow-dusted bowl — on a clear morning Kanchenjunga shows itself in the distance. The descent begins through Lungthung viewpoint, with its wide panoramas and a couple of small tea stalls. Thambi View Point is the highlight of the day: the classic shot looking down over Zuluk's famous 32 hairpin bends. You wind down through Zuluk village itself, once a trading post on the old Silk Route, before Padamchen and Rongli mark the last checkpoints on the way back into Gangtok.
Places to Visit: Rumtek Monastery, Enchey Monastery, Do Drul Chorten, Ganesh Tok, Hanuman Tok, Namgyal Institute of Tibetology, Banjhakri Falls. Today stays local. Rumtek Monastery, seat-in-exile of the Karmapa, is the first stop, followed by Enchey Monastery and the Do Drul Chorten close by. Ganesh Tok and Hanuman Tok give you two more viewpoints over the town, and the Namgyal Institute of Tibetology and Banjhakri Falls round out the sightseeing. The evening is free again at MG Marg for shopping and a last taste of local food.
Places to Visit: Teesta River route (return). An early breakfast, then the drive back down to the plains for your onward journey. The circuit concludes with a drop at NJP or Bagdogra.
